Should An Announcer Always Be An Extrovert?

What is in your mind when you hear the word ‘announcer’? Most of you might answer by ‘a person who works in radio’, ‘someone who talks in front of microphone in a radio station’, ‘a cool job’, etc. Well, it’s all true, and I agree with the last one *oops*

I'm an announcer, well not a professional announcer. I joined two radio communities. In college and the other one is out of college. I like broadcasting thing especially radio announcing. I thought maybe it is a passion. I 'on air' at least once a week. And as long as I do it, I’ve learned a lot of new things. And then finally there is a moment where I feel like there is something 'wrong' on me. That feeling appeared everytime I meet my community friends, they were more expressive. I thought maybe it was just an early euforia and maybe sooner I will be like them. I waited for that moment, where I can bound well with them, and it didn't come. Lately I knew that I'm an introvert, that's why I can't easily and directly express what I feel in public, unlike my others community friends or some radio announcers that I usually listened to. I know some good announcers, and when I observe them -how they speak, how they deliver the messages, and how they interract or communicate with others- I got a conclusion that they are basically extrovert. Different with me which is an introvert. And I thought it was a problem. Some questions started pop in my head, one of them was "how come a radio broadcaster is an introvert?". From that moment I was kind of loose my confidence and was thinking to quit from radio thing.

A few moments later, I realized that there is nothing wrong whether you are an extrovert or introvert. It is true that both of those personalities can affect to what you do but it is just how you see it, from which point of view. I came to some workshops about radio broadcasting. I remembered the speaker said that no matter what your personality is, if you want to learn then it doesn't matter.

A couple time ago, I had chance to interview one of my announcer friend. She is a professional announcer in one of commercial radios in Yogyakarta. She said “As long as I work as an announcer, being cheerful and talkative is needed. And if you are an extrovert, it would so helpful because you don’t have to try so hard to manage words. But if you are an introvert, there is no big deal, though. Because I have some friends, when in real life they are not too opened but when they are in front of microphone, they could be 100% different person (read: extrovert), I think it is cool because it is as if they have two personalities in one soul, unlike me who is basically an extrovert”.

I personally agree with her statement, it is kind of giving me motivation to be more confident in what I am doing. And finally, I believe that work hard and spirit of learning are more matter than who you are or what your personality is. Thanks for reading.
